چکیده

Thyroidectomy hastens, while gonadectomy delays, but does not permanently prevent, involution of the thymus. Suprarenalectomy alone not only delays involution of the thymus and lymphoid tissue but may cause their regeneration. Thyroidectomy prevents this reaction even after combined suprarenalectomy and gonadectomy. Suprarenalectomy plus gonadectomy is a more powerful stimulus for thymus and lymphoid regeneration than either of these influences alone. The combined effect of these two factors results in certain lymphoid and thymus hyperplasia in rabbits which persists until regeneration of accessory interrenal tissue corrects the physiological defect. The syndrome thus experimentally produced resembles status lymphaticus and is believed to depend mainly on a partial loss of certain functions of the interrenal and sex glands rather than of the chromaffin tissue. The normal and abnormal lymphoid and thymic hyperplasias of infancy and childhood are believed to be manifestations of a functional underdevelopment of the interrenal and sex glands of varying intensity. The so called lymphatic constitution which underlies or accompanies exophthalmic goiter, Addison's disease, and acromegaly also appears to be dependent on a partial suppression of certain functions of the interrenal and sex glands.

The Influence of Thyroidectomy, Splenectomy, Gonadectomy, and Suprarenalectomy upon the Development of Experimental Atherosclerosis in Rabbits

Alimentary hypercholesterolemia acting over a sufficient period of time (in rabbits with all organs intact, 110 days or longer) causes deposition of cholesterol within the intima of the aorta. Deposition of cholesterol within the intima of the aorta initiates the formation of experimental atheromata. Thyroidectomy, splenectomy, and gonadectomy augment hypercholesterolemia and thereby facilitate...

The Influence of the Suprarenal Gland on the Thymus

1. Double suprarenalectomy in growing rats is an additional stimulus for thymic growth and brings about marked prepubertal hyperplasia of this gland. 2. Our results on young rats suggest that the suprarenal cortex may be a factor in the excessive thymic hyperplasias seen in infants and children.

Further Studies on T. Lewisi Infection in Albino Rats

T. lewisi infection in normal adult 3 month old albino rats raised from a single stock and maintained under identical conditions was studied. Daily quantitative estimates of the trypanosomes in the circulating blood were made and the course of the infection was studied. Bilateral suprarenalectomy in rats lowers the resistance to a subsequent infection with T. lewisi. About 70 per cent of these ...

Effects of the modulator and range compensator blades on Bragg curve and calculating the secondary particle dose in proton-therapy of thymus gland cancer using MCNPX, FLUKA and GEANT4 codes

The thymus gland is an endocrine gland that plays an important role in the body’s immunity. Thymus gland cancer happens very rarely and one treatment way is radiation therapy. Due to the location of this gland and its proximity to the sensitive organs, radiation therapy of thymus gland cancer will bring the risk of side effects. In this paper, a Mird phantom is simulated and a modulator and ran...

Immunological Studies in Relation to the Supra- Renal Gland. Ii. Hemolysin Formation in Suprarenalectomized

There is a great deal of evidence both from morphological and physiological studies that the suprarenal gland plays a significant r61e in the defensive mechanism of the body against intoxication. During the past 7 years numerous observers have established that the resistance of suprarenalectomized rats and rabbits to trauma and to injections of various poisons and toxins is markedly diminished,...
